What is Crepey skin?

Thin, finely wrinkled skin that looks like crêpe paper can feel ageing and unfair. If you’ve glanced at your upper arms, neck or knees, see this type of skin and wondered “what on earth happened?”, read on. We aim to explain what crepey skin is, why it develops, and what you can do about it at Aesthetica Medical…

What is crepey skin?

Crepey skin is skin that becomes thin, loose and finely wrinkled, often with a slightly crinkled texture. It’s different from your typical expression type wrinkles, - it affects larger surface areas and tends to appear where skin is naturally thinner or has had more sun. Still, it can show up almost anywhere, including the face, chest and abdomen.

Why does crepey skin happen?

The short answer - gradual loss of collagen, elastin and skin lipids. UV exposure may speed this up, so decades spent in the sun without consistent SPF will add up. Hormonal changes after menopause might reduce skin thickness. Significant weight loss, dehydration, smoking and chronic stress can nudge the process along too. Even so, genetics can mean some people notice crepiness earlier than their friends of the same age.

Everyday steps that help

You can’t turn back the clock, but you can support your skin barrier and nudge collagen activity. Try:
  • Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on exposed areas, all year.
  • A rich moisturiser with humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid) and ceramides to reduce that dry, papery feel.
  • Retinoids (retinol or prescription-strength variants) to stimulate collagen turnover, - start slowly to minimise irritation.
  • Gentle chemical exfoliants (lactic acid or low-strength glycolic acid) to smooth texture if your skin tolerates them.
  • Protein-rich nutrition and adequate hydration to support skin integrity from within.
  • Avoiding smoking and mismanaging stress, as both can impair repair mechanisms.

Clinic treatments that target crepey skin

Here’s where professional interventions can add structure and hydration.

NuEra Tight (radiofrequency skin tightening)

The NuAra Tight device heats the dermis in a controlled way, which may trigger collagen remodelling over a series of sessions. Sensation is typically warm, not painful. Results build gradually, so patience is needed.

Microneedling

Tiny needles create micro-channels that prompt your skin’s repair response. Over several treatments, you might see improved firmness and texture. On balance, combining microneedling with targeted serums may provide more visible gains.

Polynucleotides

Polynucleotides are injectable biostimulators. They use nucleic acid fragments to encourage cell regeneration and hydration. They aim to give improved elasticity and dermal quality.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma)

Your own plasma, rich in growth factors, is injected or microneedled into the skin. PRP aims to enhance collagen production and healing. It’s not a one-hit wonder; repeat sessions are commonly required.

Profhilo

Profhilo is a high-concentration hyaluronic acid injectable that spreads beneath the skin to boost hydration and subtly firm crepey areas. Results develop over weeks as your skin remodels.

Obagi range (medical-grade skincare)

Select Obagi products include retinoids, antioxidants and barrier support to maintain gains between procedures. A tailored plan minimises irritation, because overdoing activities can worsen dryness.

Chemical peels

Light to Medium peels (e.g. lactic, mandelic, TCA in controlled strengths) may refine texture and prompt collagen activity. You’ll need downtime planning and strict sun protection afterwards.
