It’s easy to think of skincare as something topical, - creams, serums, and procedures. But what you eat might shape your skin just as much as what you apply. Skin reflects your internal health, and many signs of ageing, inflammation, or dullness often begin in the gut, not the mirror. Considering that we perform anti-ageing treatments here at Aesthetica Medical, we thought we’d mix it up a bit by including things that you can do for your skin, outside of having skin treatments.

Why diet matters for skin ageing

The skin is an organ, and like any living tissue in our body, it needs the right nutrients to thrive. Age and sun exposure certainly do leave their mark, but one often-overlooked driver of skin ageing is your diet, especially the quiet building-up of inflammation and oxidative stress over time.

Certain foods can accelerate this process.

Sugar and ultra-processed carbohydrates: for example, do more than spike your blood sugar, - they bind to your skin’s structural proteins (collagen and elastin), damaging their integrity in a process known as glycation.
The potential result? Skin that’s thinner, drier, and less able to bounce back. Fine lines, dull tone, and age spots may follow.

Yes, smoking is a significant contributor, due to the repetitive puckering of the lips and the damaging effects of smoking on skin elasticity, but these lines can also develop in non-smokers. Factors such as natural ageing, sun exposure, genetics, and repeated facial expressions all have something to do with their formation.

How Can Smoker's Lines Be Treated?

One or more approaches can be taken to help soften and reduce the appearance of these lines. The one(s) we offer will always be the most suitable treatment for your particular case. Ideally, you turn up armed with a list.

Sun Smart, Not Sun-Soaked (2-4 Weeks Before) - Our Splendor X laser is clever and safe for tanned skin, but we still advise avoiding direct sun exposure, sunbeds, and any fake tan products on the area you’re having treated for at least two to four weeks beforehand. Skin that’s had a lot of sun can be more sensitive. If you do catch the sun, please let your therapist know.
Pause Plucking (4 Weeks Before) - For the laser to work its magic, the hair root needs to be there. So, stop all waxing, plucking, tweezing, or using hair removal creams on the treatment area for at least four weeks before your session. Shaving is the only green-lighted hair removal method.
Skincare Product Review (Chat with your Therapist) - If you’re using products with strong active ingredients like topical retinoids on the area, please mention it to your therapist. They’ll let you know if and when you should stop using them before your session (it’s often about four weeks for retinoids, but always follow our specific advice ).
Shave the Day Before (12-24 Hours Prior) - Shave the treatment area 12-24 hours before you come in. This helps the laser focus its energy on the hair follicle under the skin, not on the hair above it. This makes the treatment more effective and comfortable. Try to avoid shaving within 8 hours of your appointment to prevent any skin irritation.
Clean Skin On the Day - Please make sure the area is squeaky clean and free from any lotions, creams, makeup, deodorant, or fragrances.
Comfortable Clothes are a Must - Opt for loose-fitting clothing to wear to your appointment, especially if you're treating larger or more sensitive spots. This will help avoid any rubbing on your skin afterwards.
Caffeine? Save for later - Some people find that caffeine can make them a bit more sensitive. You might want to skip your usual coffee or tea on the day of your treatment.

This helps the laser handpiece glide smoothly and can also help keep the skin cool. (The Splendor X has an excellent built-in cooling system, so gel isn't always necessary but may be used).
The Laser in Action - The therapist will then use the laser machine hand piece, passing it over the treatment area. Our Splendor X uses a unique square-shaped spot size for better coverage and to avoid missed areas or excessive overlap. You'll hear the laser and feel the handpiece on your skin.
What Does it Feel Like? - As the laser targets the hair follicles, most people describe the sensation as a very quick, warm snap. The Splendor X’s advanced dual cooling system works simultaneously to cool the skin's surface, making the treatment much more comfortable than outdated laser technologies. You might feel a warming sensation as the laser heats the hair follicles. For sensitive areas, it might be described as 'mild discomfort,' but it’s generally very tolerable.
Treatment Duration - The length of your session depends on the size of the area being treated. Small areas like the upper lip might take just a few minutes (e.g., 10 minutes), while larger areas like the back or legs could take up to an hour or more.

Immediately After The Laser Treatment

Skin Reaction - It's perfectly normal for the treated skin to look a little red or feel slightly warm, similar to mild sunburn. You might also see some slight swelling around the hair follicles (called perifollicular oedema), this is actually a good sign that the treatment has been effective! These effects usually subside within a few hours to a day or two.

Post-Treatment Care

Your laser hair removal session is complete. Now, looking after your skin to make sure it heals beautifully and you get the best long-term results is key. Your skin might feel a little tender, red, or slightly swollen. This is all quite normal. Here’s how to give it some TLC:

Immediate Aftercare (First 48 Hours)

Cool the skin Down - You can apply a cold pack or a cool compress to the treated area if it feels warm or uncomfortable. This can help reduce any tenderness.
Keep it Clean and Dry - Gently cleanse the area if needed, but avoid harsh scrubbing. Pat it dry softly. Try to keep the area clean and dry for the first 48 hours.
Soothe with Aloe Vera - Applying aloe vera gel is a great way to soothe the skin for the first few days post-treatment. A gentle, unfragranced moisturising cream can also be used. Check the ingredients of anything you might use and ensure no alcohol is present.
Loose Clothing - Continue to wear loose, soft clothing over the treated area to avoid any friction or irritation for at least 48 hours.
Hands Off - Avoid rubbing, picking, or scratching the treated skin. Let it heal naturally.
Avoid Makeup - If you’ve had facial treatment, it's best to avoid applying makeup to the treated area for at least 48 hours to reduce the risk of irritation or infection.
Alcohol and Caffeine - It’s wise to avoid excess alcohol or caffeine for 48 hours after treatment, as these can sometimes increase sensitivity or flushing.

In the Following Days and Weeks (72 Hours +)

Sun Protection is Non-Negotiable - This is important! Avoid direct sun exposure and sunbeds on the treated area for at least 2-4 weeks (ideally 4 weeks) after your treatment. When you are out in the sun, wear a high SPF sunscreen (SPF 50 or greater) on the area. Why? This helps prevent pigmentation changes.
Avoid Heat - Steer clear of hot baths, showers, saunas, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise that causes excessive sweating for at least 48-72 hours (or as advised by your therapist). Warm water is fine, just keep the temperature down. Why? Your skin retains heat after the laser; adding more can increase irritation or prolong redness.
Chlorine - Avoid swimming in chlorinated water (like pools or hot tubs) for 2-3 days after your treatment. Why? Chlorine is a chemical irritant and can dry out or aggravate freshly treated skin.

You might be considering dermal fillers and wondering how long they last for. We get this question a lot in clinic. You may see many slightly varying numbers on aesthetic clinic websites. Yes, different patients will see different results but we attempt to give the definitive answer. We focus here on hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, since these are most commonly used in aesthetics (we use them at Aesthetica Medical). They are also reversable. We based this information here on clinical studies and expert reviews, rather than marketing claims.

What is HA Exactly?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar molecule that holds water in your skin. In fillers it is cross-linked into a gel and injected to add volume and smooth lines. HA is highly hygroscopic meaning it can bind up to the often quoted ‘1,000 times its weight in water’ so each injection draws in moisture and ‘plumps’ the area. Over time your body’s enzymes (hyaluronidases) and free radicals will gradually break down the gel. Uncross-linked HA (as used in some skin serums) dissolves over a matter of days, but the cross-linked gels used in dermal fillers resist degradation for months. In short, you get the immediate volumising effect, which fades slowly as the gel is absorbed.

In practice, most HA fillers will last around 6 to 18 months, depending on factors such as the injection’s site, the product’s formula, and your individual metabolism. Clinical studies have shown that HA fillers often maintain visible effects for over 12 months, and in some cases, much longer. One review found HA fillers remaining detectable for 2 years or more in some patients (1). The same review noted that mobile areas (lips, around the mouth) tend to fade sooner.

Factors that influence how long your filler lasts

Injection Area

Fillers in active or thin-skinned areas (the lips or tear troughs under the eyes) tend to break down faster. Cheeks and jawline more static and often hold volume longer.

Product Formulation

Higher concentration of HA and stronger cross-linking generally means longer duration. In one split-face study of nasolabial folds (laugh lines) we found a denser Juvederm Ultra Plus (24 mg/mL HA) held volume better than a softer Restylane (20 mg/mL) over a period of 6 to 12 months (2) In simpler words, “stronger” gels resist enzymes longer. Volume injected

A larger amount of filler can maintain visible lift for more time simply because there is more material to dissolve. That study on Juvederm vs Restylane showed that a single treatment can give a clinically significant correction that lasts up to one year or more. (3)

Your metabolism and habits

If you have a very high metabolic rate, or lifestyle factors like smoking or sun damage, you may break down HA faster. These factors are hard to predict precisely, but they contribute to individual variation.

Other types of fillers

Other filler types have different durations. Calcium hydroxylapatite (e.g. Radiesse® ) is a thicker gel used for deeper volume. Studies of CaHA in the jawline found clinically meaningful effects lasting over a year. (4), and it is often said to last about 12–18 months. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA, marketed as Sculptra® ) works by stimulating your own collagen; it typically requires 2–3 sessions and the results can build up and last up to 2 years in many patients. (The difference is that PLLA’s effect is slower to appear, but more durable, since it creates new tissue.)

To summerise, hyaluronic acid fillers generally give around 6–18 months of volume in most areas, with cheek and jawline injections often at the longer end of the range and lips/eyes at the shorter end. Each brand has its own typical longevity (as shown above). Your aesthetic injector will choose a product and injection plan (including touch-ups) to suit your goals and the area being treated. Bear in mind that individual factors (age, metabolism, movement of the area, and health habits) will affect the exact length of how long your results last.

We have to be upfront, but removing one is a bit of a journey, - it will take some time. We want you to have a clear understanding of the factors that will influence the process.

What Is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy - derived from the Greek words 'cryo' (cold) and 'therapeia' (cure) - is an innovative treatment that harnesses the power of extreme cold temperatures for therapeutic benefits. Cryotherapy is one of those words that could relate to 2 types of treatments. As a patient, you mustn't get the two mixed up and book in for the wrong one! In simple terms, cryotherapy involves using very cold temperatures for therapeutic purposes.

The whole body version is where you sit in a tank and are subjected to temperatures lower than -100°C for a period of 2-4 minutes. It might sound a bit sci-fi, but it's actually a treatment that can have some real benefits. The treatment we offer at Aesthetica Medical is localised Leeds cryotherapy , sometimes termed cryosurgery. This is the version that uses very cold temperatures in the form of a gas to remove various types of skin lesions.

The Science Behind Cryotherapy

How does cryotherapy, using the CryoPen , actually work? It's all about the precise application of extreme cold to destroy unwanted tissue such as skin tags and age spots. The CryoPen uses nitrous oxide (N₂O) at a temperature of -89°C. This extreme cold rapidly freezes the cells of the targeted lesion. This rapid freezing causes ice crystals to form within the cells.

These ice crystals rupture the cell membranes, effectively destroying the cells without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. It's controlled demolition of the unwanted cells. This is why it's so precise, and why we favour nitrous oxide over liquid nitrogen, which can be much harder to control.

If you are reading this, you may have noticed small red, blue, or purple veins appearing close to the surface of your skin. These are termed thread veins , also known as telangiectasia, or sometimes spider veins, and often appear on your face or legs. They may cause no discomfort, but their presence may be affecting how you view your skin.

What Are Thread Veins?

Thread veins measure a few millimetres or less and tend to occur in areas beneath the skin in areas of thinner skin. They often form when blood vessels weaken and dilate (expand). They can appear anywhere on the body but most patients will notice them around the cheeks, nose, or thighs. It is assumed that as skin becomes thinner and loses both collagen and subsequently, elasticity, veins on the face become more of a possibility.

Why Do Thread Veins Develop?

Genetics

If a close relative experiences thread veins, you may be genetically predisposed. You may still get thread veins. Even if you carefully follow all the preventive steps you can take, this inherited factor may influence how readily they appear.

Lifestyle

Your daily habits can place pressure on blood vessels, causing them to become more visible. You may find that prolonged sitting or standing, as well as crossing your legs, affects circulation. Staying active (less sitting) and maintaining a suitable body weight can help reduce pressure on these vessels. Limiting your alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking also support a more healthy blood flow, and in turn, healthy blood vessels. Avoiding tight-fitting clothing is often recommended, as are high heels.

Hormonal Changes

Can Aesthetic Injections Help Alleviate Depressive Symptoms?

Could Botulinum Toxin, as used in Botox® treatments , help depression? Emerging research suggests that the act of injecting botulinum toxin may, at least, offer a novel treatment avenue to reduce depression by relaxing the muscles involved in frowning.

You may have heard that smiling, even forcibly, may help alleviate depression. Some studies actually support this.

The physical act of smiling could trigger positive neurological and physiological responses. That being said, the opposite may also be true with the act of frowning.

The proposed mechanism is that by eliminating the negative emotional feedback that frowns provide to the brain, Botox® can help improve mood.

Evidence Supporting Botox® for Depression

An analysis of five trials (1) found quality evidence that Botox® treatment can be effective for treating depression.

One randomised clinical trial (2) directly compared Botox® to a placebo for treating major depression and found a statistically significant difference in depression scores between the two groups at six weeks, with the Botox® group showing greater improvement.

Mechanisms of Action: How Botox® May Alleviate Depression

The proposed mechanism behind Botox®'s potential effects in alleviating symptoms of depression involves the paralysis of the corrugator muscles, which are responsible for frowning. This process decreases facial feedback related to negative emotions. As a result, maintaining a negative mood becomes more challenging, potentially improving overall mood.

Supporting this concept, research indicates that encouraging individuals to smile more frequently, regardless of their initial mood, can positively affect their mental state, contributing to mood enhancement and a reduction in depression symptoms. Cue: A Smile :-)!

The Facial Feedback Hypothesis and Emotional Well-Being

This relationship between facial expressions and emotional well-being is grounded in the theory of embodied cognition, suggesting that bodily actions significantly influence our mental states.

Specifically, when Botox® injections inhibit the frown muscles' activity, the feedback loop connecting facial muscle activity and the brain's emotional centre is interrupted. This disruption may lead to diminished negative emotional states.

The act of smiling, whether spontaneous or induced, can initiate the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin, (3) as mentioned in this study . These chemicals are known for their mood-lifting properties. The facial feedback hypothesis (4) would suggest that just as smiling can make us feel happier by promoting the release of positive neurotransmitters, frowning might contribute to a decrease in mood (4).

The Future of Botox® in Treating Depression

The research on using Botox® to treat depression shows promising but mixed results. While some studies have found Botox® can alleviate depressive symptoms, the evidence is not yet conclusive, and more research is needed to understand its potential as a novel depression treatment fully. Overall, the evidence suggests that facial expressions can influence depression, with frowning potentially worsening it and smiling potentially improving it. A good a reason as any to smile more, even if you don’t feel like it!

In answer to the question, “Can Botox® help with depression?” It seems so, but probably only when used to smooth out the frown muscles.

We came across the mention of Botox® and depression while researching another article discussing the many uses of Botox®. We are not advocating that people who are depressed should go out and get Botox®. This article serves as food for thought.

Collagen is a protein that acts as the main structural component of your skin, providing it with strength and elasticity.
